Short Story 27

Her Habit

She was constantly looking for a new job. It was a habit she had when she was unhappy. One of the easiest things to change. People didn’t understand, but she didn’t ask their opinions, she didn’t see how it much mattered if the only person who was inconvenienced by it was herself. Her general portfolio of careers was far more robust than most, and she was notorious for never having a job longer than sixteen months at any given point. This didn’t have much of an effect on her living situation as she was single and made sure to procure apartments with very low rent, with short term lease options, area was not a deterrent.

She had very few friends though her list of phone contacts were near endless, and one of few to contain people in it that had names that ranged the entirety of the alphabet. She was guaranteed that no matter who she called they would all remember her, though how no one was quite sure.

In a matter of speaking, she had grown to be a sort of enigma amongst those who had the opportunity to meet her. A shadow that came in with the morning light and faded into nothingness with the night. This idea was an odd source of pleasure for her and so with all good will and attentiveness she kept it up.

It was only strange, that despite how many times she was hired, regardless of all the resumes recommendation letters, and the like no one had any idea how old she was. Even stranger still, no one knew her name.
